Mr. Schroter was my European History teacher at Waldwick High School. He, along with History Department Chair, Mr. Parelli, and English Department Chair, Mr. Ness, were teachers who had a great influence on me. I graduated from WHS in 1967 and also went to Montclair State. I appreciate Mr. Schroter for what he taught me at WHS and for what a kind person and wonderful teacher he was. God Bless his soul in heaven.

I remember how Herbert loved to leaf through the historical magazines I shared with him. He also enjoyed a People magazine all about the 80's. One of my favorite moments with Herbert was showing him a picture of the deer that lived on the eye doctor's lawn next to my house. I sang a favorite song, "As the Deer," based on Psalm 42:1: "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God." The first stanza and refrain of the song go like this: "As the deer panted for the water, so my soul longeth after Thee. You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship Thee. You alone are my strength, my shield, to You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship Thee." John knew the song from worship at Trinity and sang along.
Here's a prayer: Thank You, dear Father, for Herbert Schroter's long life, his long marriage to Lois, and for his children, (Pastor) John and (Doctor) Debbie. Thank You for helping Herbert to serve You as a brother, husband, father and uncle. Thank You for helping Herbert to serve You as a teacher of history. Thank You for calling Herbert Your own dear child in the waters of Holy Baptism. Thank You for nurturing and forgiving Herbert through Your Word and the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper.
Thank You for helping us to care for Herbert. Comfort Herbert's family in their grief with the sure hope of eternal life. Give us a joyful reunion before You as we see the new heaven and earth You create and reveal on the Last Day.
Walk with us now in our times of grief, dear Jesus.
We pray, dear Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus' name.
