Obituary of Anthony Salvatore Gerbino

Anthony Salvatore Gerbino 91 years young, passed away peacefully at home on January 18, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Anthony was born in Jersey City, grew up in Cliffside Park and attended St. Peter’s High School before going on to Villanova University, where he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering.

He began his career at Western Electric, where he met his wife Virginia.  He later worked for the Singer Company, Agfa Gevaert and Tetley Tea from where he retired.

After retirement, Anthony worked as a substitute teacher for the Cliffside Park and Fairview Boards of Education.  A role in which he truly enjoyed.

Anthony proudly served his country as a member of the Army National Guard, serving in the 4th Medium Tank Battalion, 50th Armor Division. In 1960, his battalion was recognized as the number one battalion in the 50th Armored Division with a “Superior” rating.  Anthony himself was recognized as the number one tank commander in the 50th Armored Division.

Anthony loved playing golf, especially with his sons and friends Joe and George.  He had a lifelong love of magic.  As a substitute teacher, he delighted students by performing magic tricks in the classroom.  He was also a wizard at chess and enjoyed playing with his sons and friends and won more games than he lost.  

Anthony is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Jerro-Gerbino of 64 years. He was a loving father to four children: Joseph and wife Zoe, Anthony and wife Lila, Stephen, Joy Marie and husband Scott.

He was a proud grandfather to Gabrielle, Stephen, Alyssa, Elizabeth, Gregory, Amber, Kaeli, Hunter, and five great-grandchildren: Sadie, Frederick, Paetyn, Brilee and Jaxson.

Anthony is survived by his brother Joseph, sister-in-law Annette and brother-in-law George as well as many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his sister, Patricia, his mother Josephine, father Joseph and brother-in-law Paul.

Anthony will be remembered for his intelligence, kindness, quiet humor, love of learning, deep devotion to his wife and family, and his service to his country. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be held at McCorry Brothers, 780 Anderson Ave., Cliffside Park, NJ, on Thursday January 22, 2026, from 2-4 & 6-8 PM.  Please gather at Our Lady of Grace, 395 Delano Place, Fairview, NJ, on Friday January 23 for celebration of Mass at 10 AM.  Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery 80-01 Metropolitan Ave., Queens, NY.
